Sun was shining bright at Wyatt Oval on Saturday afternoon as BTH hosted Harbord Seasiders. Knowing that our two main rivals were playing against each other meant this was a must win for Ratko Lovric’s men and preparation was good with two decent training session’s during the week. What we didn’t prepare for was to be two nil down after 10 minutes. A dreadful start saw Harbord open the scoring from a corner that was nodded home from there midfielder who was in so much space it’s not funny. Minutes later a long ball over the top caused havoc amongst our back line and the ball fell to their winger who lobbed the ball home over Massey. Hands on hips all round, Coach Nate DG launched his lanyard onto the clubhouse roof and manager Lovric was speechless on the sideline. Cue the comeback; We got back into the game when the ever-busy Ben Gillies picked the ball in midfield and pinged a lovely ball over the top to the now lively Joe Rushton, one touch on his chest and a lovely finish over the advancing keeper gave us some hope. Five minute later we were level, the excellent referee spotting a handball in the box that George Harle stepped up and dispatched. We were now in the driving seat and took the lead courtesy of an own goal from Harle’s Free kick that was sliced beyond the hapless Harbord keeper. All this and there had only been half hour played. The rest of the half we were well on top, Joey causing lots of damage down the right, Jason Lal’s brilliant header was superbly saved to prevent us going in 2 up. Half time 3-2 and we knew the next goal was vital Cue the missed chances; First up Joey, missed an open goal from 20 yards that he lobbed wide, Jason Lal had a one on one saved, Mark Holland missed an open goal from 5 yards, Harle and Waters had break aways they could have finished, this allowed Harbord to hang onto hope of getting something out the game, even though they were now down to 10 men. The deciding goal did finally come on 75 minutes when Harle latched onto Gillies ball and lobbed the substitute keeper who was in no man’s land. Just to give the neutrals that little bit more excitement for the last 5 minutes, a miss controlled ball at the back allowed their winger to run through and make it 4-3 and set up a nervy ended, but we hung on and took the 3 points. With curly getting smashed 4-0 by Manly the league has now been blown wide open, and we must stay focused over the coming weeks to maintain a serious promotion push.
