The Sapphires had a great 2020! The small but vocal squad hung in there to finish 2nd in a strong division 1. Every week our strong defence gave us a great base to help stay unbeaten in the first half of the season.
A very unlucky loss to eventual champions ‘the CC Strikers’ lead to a 3 game losing streak.
We showed great spirit to bounce back and grab a spot in the 1 vs 2 FINAL game!
The final itself extracted the best from this never say die group of girls. On a hot Sunday morning with no substitutes, the girls gave the CC Strikers a tough game.
With the Scores at 0-0 (and a last minute change of goalie!), the match went to penalties.
Two great penalty saves from Charlie V were not enough and we unfortunately went down 3-2. The girls played so well. No subs against a full CC striker team with 3 subs. Such a close game and a great game to watch against their arch rivals.
Our WU13/1 team made a fantastic effort and summed up The Sapphires season. Well done girls.
WU13/1 coach was Brian O'Reilly and the team was managed by Brendan Hall. Thankyou to both of you for coaching and managing such a strong and delightful team.
